My artist residency in October 2014 was in Ginestrelle on Mount Subasio near Assisi, the Italian birthplace of St. Francis. During my month long stay, I created a canvas banner 5.5’ x 33”, the largest single piece I have ever done. Called Perilous Majesty, it represents the two faces of Mother Nature.
Humans revere the majestic outline of mountains against the sky. But the volcanic eruption of such a mountain brings magma flowing down, burning everything in its path. Beneath Mount Vesuvius are the ruins of Pompeii. The earth itself regenerates, but those humans who could not escape perished.
