Maiden Migrations

I have worked for the past seven and a half years on art that captures my sense of wonder in relation to the audacity of our primal ancestors who left Africa and struck out for new lands. We are deeply indebted to these original pioneers into the unknown. Please click Exhibition to find my proposal for Maiden Migrations – a multi-media installation on African Origins, the first marine migration into Southwest Asia, the second migration (by land) into the Ancient Near East, subsequent migrations into Southeast Asia/Oceania, and my personal ancestral journey.

For images of each segment of Maiden Migrations, please click Gallery.

Under Narration you will find some of the text that accompanies the exhibition.

I am using data from the Genographic Project of National Geographic. As research expands, dates are adjusted. This map is already a couple of years old.

Still to come is artwork sharing human migrations into Northeast Asia 45,000 – 35,000 years ago, the Mediterranean 45,000 – 35,000 years ago, Central Asia 45,000 – 35,000 years ago, Northern Europe 45,000 – 35,000 years ago, and the Americas 20,000 years ago. The vast mainland of China was a recipient of migrations from Southwest Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Northeast Asia. The invention of agriculture 10,000 years ago occurred simultaneously across the planet.

I would be interested in accompanying Maiden Migrations exhibitions with artist residencies on college campuses. During a residency I would work with students from several disciplines on the creation of artwork and narration for one of the not-yet-completed migrations. Perhaps students on different campuses could thus participate in completing an exhibition of all the global migrations that brought us to every corner of the world.
